Montana Recap
We got into Montana at almost dusk somewhere around June 18th. After several taxing, short days (i.e. 80 miles) through awful elevation gains/rough roads, we made it to Glacier National Park. In Glacier, we camped at Apgar, got info on the Going To The Sun Road clearance (opened for hiker/biker access on June 21st, father's day), and ate some bomb blueberry pancakes. We rode 14 miles to Avalanche Creek campgrounds, the last place to camp before the pass. It started raining at 10 PM and continued to do so for 30 hours. We sat in our tent, read and ate cold chef boyardee straight out of the can. Miserable. On Tuesday June 23rd we (somewhat illegally) crossed over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, and got pulled over by Park Rangers on our way out of the park. We got warnings. We camped in Browning, MT that night. The next day was supposed to be really long, but two flats and a bike wreck slowed things down and we camped in Shelby with a bunch of different bicycling crews. We rode from Shelby to Havre, starting a string of century or century plus days, leaving us in Malta and Wolf Point. The last few miles of Montana involved absolutely horrendous road construction. Fortunately the STATE LINE CASINO and her awesome bartenders were there to serve free snacks to hungry bicyclists. THANKS GUYS! |
